Rob Walch: Putting Podcast Into Perspective

Updated: Oct 12, 2021

Rob Walch is the VP of Podcast Relations at :Libsyn. He made an appearance on our show back in 2018, and we were long overdue to have him back given the changing nature of the podcast world. During Rob's session at Podcast Movement in August, he manoeuvred his way through his presentation to debunk many of the marketing myths that are propelled across the internet. Myths like Rating and Reviewing the podcast will help it be discovered, and that there are over two million podcasts. (While true - only 325,000 are active)

In this episode you will hear Rob debunk myths and put podcasting into perspective. Did you know the Super Bowl generates as much money in a day as the Podcast Industry does in a year? And yes, having a presence on YouTube will help your podcast get discovered. You're also likely doing better than you think in regards to your podcast's performance. We also go deep on podcast apps, podcast websites and talk about Apple's plans for ios in the future. Rob knows Apple products as he hosts Today in iOS.

Rob host The Feed along with Elsie Escobar and it's one of the podcasts I listen to every other week to keep my view of the podcast industry in perspective.

Five other podcasts and resources that I listen to on a regular basis to stay on top of podcasting.

(In no particular order)

We had Evo on the show last year.

James Cridland's Podnews. This is delivered Monday thru Friday in a newsletter and audio format. Sign up for the newsletter here.

The Jag Show Podcast: Jon Gay hosts this short form weekly podcast with commentary on the week's podcast news.

The New Media Show: Todd Cochrane from Blubrry and Rob Greenlee from Libsyn combine podcast superpowers to discuss what's new in podcasting for about 90 minutes weekly. Live on Youtube/Facebook and Twitter. Available in podcast form about 24 hours later.

Your Podcast on Video

Rob also told us about the value of having your podcast episode on YouTube for discoverability. I would love to say that this is a complete waste of time but there are smarter people out there who have the evidence to demonstrate that it is good. After all, youTube is the number 2 search engine in the world after Google - who own YouTube.... I'm skeptical because YouTube is likely to recognize that this is just a still image of some audio and downgrade my channel. It's not like I have a huge following anyhow - but I would love to have you as a subscriber! Please give me a subscribe.
